WHAT UNI DID FOR THEM?
Outside on the university lawn we see NICK wearing a graduation cap and gown and clutching a scroll. He smiles inertly into the middle distance before throwing down the cap and coming to life.
NICK
So, the big question: is it all worth it? Well in my experience yes. I went to university to study communication and business studies. I met loads of nice friends and landed my dream job in telly. I now live in a manor house and am surrounded by a harem of lap dogs like this.
NICK is attended by a small entourage of hair and make-up people; he shoos them away and says get lost rudely.
NICK
But don't just take my word for it; here are some more well-heeled and respected individuals who'd be nothing, nothing without their degrees.
ELOISE TOOKE - Managing Director Power TV - Did a degree in French and Spanish at Bristol university
When I first arrived at university I thought it would be a lot like school. And it was so unlike school. It was so exciting to be in this enormous community this giant giant community and I fancied everyone.
BOBBY REDDY - Corporate Lawyer - Did a degree in Natural sciences at Cambridge university
I think probably the most important aspect of university is - even more so than academics - is actually the social experience and the life changing experience that you get.
DYLAN JONES - Editor of GQ Magazine - Did a degree in graphic design from central saint martins London
You meet people from all walks of life. And I don’t think that you can um, overestimate how fantastic that is and what a great opportunity that is when you are a young person.
BOBBY REDDY
I learnt more about myself and where I wanted to be and where I wanted to go in the three years as an under-graduate than I did in my previous 18 years by a long stretch.
DYLAN JONES
When we’re recruiting at GQ, we’re looking for people who can make things happen. And most of those people come from university because the ones who have applied themselves learn those skills at university
ELOISE TOOKE
I learnt how to cook, I fell in love, I did all the pub crawls you know just stuff that you don’t do any kind of freedom when you are at school.
DYLAN JONES
If you are in two minds about whether or not to pursue higher education, you should absolutely do it because it’s such a fantastic opportunity.
ELOISE TOOKE
Absolutely don’t go and start working a second before you have to because it’s something that you will have to do for the rest of your life.
BOBBY REDDY
What you learn at university will actually shape your career and shape you as a person and it’s always going to help you whatever career you look to pursue.
We return to Nick, now relaxing on a bench in another area of the garden outside the university. A stylist fusses with his hair while he regards himself in a hand-held mirror.
NICK
Ok so there you have it, getting a degree is going to get you the job that you want and get you more money it’s simple.
Another stylist enters frame, and hands Nick a large coffee.
NICK
How many times? You don't look at the talent.
The stylist looks ashamed and Nick throws a "you can't get the staff these days" look to camera.
